As deep as you are, how does one like yourself deal with an industry that is usually based on material?  Good question.  I often get asked that question from my friends in Los Angeles.  Being "real" and sensitive to people's energy is really hard in this industry.  I have had people who I embraced as close friends reveal their true colors. Ultimately, my relationship with them was only about what I can do for them, what's around me, etc.  It can be very disappointing however, I always walk away knowing that life will teach them.  I can't stay close to anyone that is too materialistic and self centered.  For me, life is about sharing and giving.  And when one is too self centered, it becomes very draining.  I think we all have a choice to build our surroundings that will allow us to grow and prosper but with dignity and respect.

I've seen people stop you in most places you go

recognizing you, how does it feel?  Well, it can be flattering but sometimes, people forget that you're human and sitting down enjoying good conversation with a friend I consider personal and private.  I've been interrupted many times.  I once had this guy tap me and tell me, "are you Russell Tanoue the photographer?  You are my greatest fan."  Then he slipped me this club invitation.  I was turned off.  But there are fun ones too, like this guy who came up to me and asked if I was the guy on Wild On E and said he made a bet with his friend for 100.00.  Oh well, his friend had to cough out the bucks!

The best are those that recognize and appreciate my personal project Project Shine.  It is there where I find most joy from.

Do you get excited around celebrities?  No I don't.  When you're in the industry and work with professionals, you work with them as human beings and not a figure.

I was invited to this event and  I didn't even know who Warren Moon was and had to look him up on the internet.  When we met, he expressed to me how he read about me and my project on the internet.  I was very, very touched.  He is really a true professional with a humble spirit that is felt. I appreciate human souls like him.

I've been seeing you in magazines, the news and events, are interviews fun?  Honestly, I get nervous at times because I never know what will be asked and most importantly, you never know how the story will come out.  So I just try to be real and hope that my message gets across the way my heart feels. I'm just grateful that the media is interested in what I do because it's an opportunity to get your message out there.

Who is this person who is portraying to be you out there?  Honestly, if I knew he'd be in prison or something.  I really don't know.  Unfortunately, this person is using my name to gain trust from innocent girls.  I feel bad for him really.  To live and waste precious time doing that must be lonely inside.  I do wish one day he'll see that if he looks deep within himself he'll find something special that he can grow on.

It seems you have accomplished some celebrity status, how does an aspiring photographer reach what you have?

Well I have to say that I don't consider myself a celebrity.  Maybe I'm popular but people will categorize you as they see fit.  As to how to get there?  That is hard to say since it just happens.  I would have to say to focus on what you really want to do and enjoy doing it.  Success comes naturally and with that new doors are open.  For me, I'm grateful that I am able to have my voice heard and try to make a difference through my talent.

What kind of advice can you give to an aspiring model?  Just do it!  Don't let anyone determine your success.  Life will teach you as well as show you the way.  It's not for everyone, but you have the right to experience the journey.
