True beauty is more than skin deep. That's why a local
photographer volunteers his time, to help people suffering from an
illness. He wants to capture their inner beauty.
It's a new program called Project Shine, and this is its debut.
Russell Tanoue's mission is to help lift the spirits of people who
are fighting a chronic or debilitating disease.
Deborah Ardolf is having fun as a model for a day - a shining
moment in what has been one of the worst years of her life. Ardolf
was diagnosed with fibro myaglia a year ago, an uncurable auto
immune disease.
She is the first client of Project Shine, a program Russell
Tanoue started.
"To bring out their best and make them realize
that although their body is battling the disease, to remember
their spirit," says Tanoue.
Project Shine begins with an hour long makeover. Ardolf says
her body often feels weak and tired, and it affects her mental
clarity. Her life has changed.
"I lost my spirit with what I have. And it's
recapturing that inner self, inner energy and happiness. The zest
for life," says Ardolf.
She had to quit her job. She struggles to find the joy in life
again.
"I love to bike, run, swim, hike in the mountains.
And now I can just look at them and wish I was
there."
Ardolf is excited about this shoot.
"I'm hoping I can take something with me,
look at myself and say yes this is what I aspire to be agan."
She is amazed and grateful at the transformation.
"He took away the tired achy feeling I had in
my face and made me look totally different."
Russell hopes to eventually expand the program to include at
risk youth and even people with low self esteem. Russell likes to
know he made a difference to somebody.
"Feeling her energy and being able to touch her
spirit and bring it out through her face, that's the greatest
thing for me," says Russell.
Soon the shoot will be over, but the moment is caught on film,
and the memories will last a lifetime.
