RTFOTO: What nationality are you? Hapa (Chinese,
Russian & Polish)
RTFOTO: Where are you originally from? Kilauea, Kauai
RTFOTO: Describe yourself in 3 words?
Spontaneous, Optimistic and Dedicated
RTFOTO: Who was or is your mentor? Oprah
RTFOTO: What was your first paying job?
Counter-help/wait staff at Roadrunner Bakery and Cafe (Kilauea,
Kauai)
RTFOTO: Name some of the shows, commercials and print ads
you've been on: Baywatch Hawaii, Pizza Hut, Countdown
Hawaii, Hawaii Opera Theater, Hawaii Prince Hotel and Toyota.
RTFOTO: What inspired you run in beauty pageants?
I always watched Miss Hawaii on TV, it was a dream for me to
have the opportunity to compete for Miss Hawaii. I always felt that
these women were so poised, graceful, well-spoken and talented. As a
child I hoped that I too could be like them one day. Miss
Hawaii/Miss America also provide scholarships for young women to
attend college, and pursued running in pageants as a vehicle to pay
for my college tuition - it worked!
RTFOTO: How would you describe your style in fashion?
Trendy, simple and feminine.
RTFOTO: How many years have you been doing what you do?
I started pursuing commercials and acting when I moved
here after high school, so that would make it 8 years now.
RTFOTO: If you could do one thing different growing up, what
would that be? I would probably choose to work less. At
one point in high school I had three jobs! One of them was a 2 hour
drive to the other side of the island. If I know what I know now, I
would choose to enjoy my teenage years and have fun, you have the
rest of your adult life to work.
RTFOTO: What drives you to continue doing what you do?
I always feel a strong desire to keep busy and maintain
an active and exciting lifestyle. What drives me is goal setting, I
continue to set new goals and maintain higher aspirations - after
one goal is met than I set a new one and it continues, that way I
don't feel stagnant.
RTFOTO: If you weren't doing what you do today, what would
you be doing? Honestly, I would love to be a
pro-surfer. I think they have the greatest life. I would love to
travel all over the world, surf the most beautiful beaches and live
in a bikini...and get paid to do it!
RTFOTO: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Married, here in Hawaii and possibly anchoring the news :)
RTFOTO: What is a good day like for you?
Getting up early in the morning reviewing homework or studying,
going to school, having lunch with a friend, studying, going to yoga
and then dinner with friends, and maybe a movie too! That sounds
like an awesome day!
RTFOTO: What embarrassing moment have you had in your career?
The most embarrassing moment thus far: was live on ABC at the
Miss America Pageant, during the swimsuit production number I was
supposed to cross paths with a fellow contestant while looking at
the camera. As we both did this we collided into one another on
national TV.
RTFOTO: What would you say is the most difficult part of your
job? Coordinating schedules, especially with 6 days a
week of classes and work at Alan Wong's it can be tricky to find a
shoot date that works for everyone.
RTFOTO: What was your most happiest moment in your career?
Without a doubt it was June 18 2004, the night I was crowned
Miss Hawaii. It really was dream realized, almost surreal infact.
Being Miss Hawaii gave me many opportunities that I may have never
had. I am forever grateful it was a wonderful experience.
RTFOTO: What makes you different from your peers?
I maintain a great desire to remain community service minded. I
continue to volunteer for non-profits and serve as a motivational
speaker. It is of great importance to always give back to your
community, I feel that I am committed to helping others in whatever
caliber I can. We need to motivate young people to gain an awareness
of the community and themselves through volunteer work.
RTFOTO: Who would you say is the hottest artist on the
market today and who do you see becoming tomorrow?
Beyonce is amazingly talented, she really is a triple threat. I
respect her talents and hardwork. A hot local talent who really has
what it takes to be a great star is Maria Remos, she is a
breathtaking jazz vocalist and her vocal abilities are superb!
RTFOTO: Who is your favorite artist? I tend to
change often but always love: Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and
Kelly Clarkson.
RTFOTO: Name some of the celebrities you have worked with
or entertained? Amy Hanaialii, Robert Cazimero, Makana,
Clay Aiken, Jake Shimabukuro and Wayne Brady to name a few.
RTFOTO: If you could pick any city to live in other than the
city you are currently in, what city would that be and why? Tokyo,
Japan. I absolutely love Japan. The culture, the people and the
food! Tokyo is very exciting, safe and the people are very
polite. There is a lot to do as far as taking in the cultural
sights, nightlife, universities and they love Hawaii, and the people
from Hawaii.
RTFOTO: What advice can you give to those aspiring what you
do? Stay focused, write thank you cards and practice
public speaking.
RTFOTO: What is your message to teens today?
Respect yourself and others, believe in yourself and don't give up
on your dreams.
RTFOTO:
If you had the power to change the world, what would you do?
I would eradicate racism and all prejudiced. I feel
that hate and fear is the root of all war, if we could accept our
differences we would all get along.
RTFOTO: What was your experience working with Russell
Tanoue? I have known Russell since I was 13 years old.
He has always been extremely professional and insightful. Russell
inspires you from the inside out, and this is evident in the images
he takes. Russell is not only immensely talented, but he is
extremely wise and I am so grateful to have him in my life.
RTFOTO: Finally, tell me something about you we don't know
about? In middle and high school I worked in production
for Kauai International Theater, I have always loved working behind
the scenes. I also aspire to work in production for television and
theater as director and/or assistant director.
RTFOTO: Care to share what's in store for you ahead?
Currently, working on my BA in Speech Communication at
HPU. For right now, I am the new host of Kimo's Vegas and will be
making a guest appearance on the new OC 16 sitcom "The Tide is
High". I am also Honorary Co-Chair and CO-Emcee for Big Brothers
and Big Sisters of Honolulu's annual "Gourmet Affair".
