A Crowded House Alone

Many, many years ago, a friend of mine wrote a song called Crowded House Alone and it hit me then.  But today, it has become somewhat of a reality for many in my position.

First I want to say, it is people who make celebrities popular.  It is people who choose their role models.  Many times, people become role models without choice.

When you're constantly being wanted or in demand, everything around becomes the same color.  Nothing really stands out.  Its like being in a crowded house but yet feeling you're the only one in it.  Many say "I love you", "You're my best friend" and a lot of times, they are saying it for them.  Meaning, they love you cause you make them feel good.  Or, "you're my best friend" cause you  give them the best.

A true friend to me is one who:

1.  Not only tells you how much you mean to them behind close doors, but is proud in public as well.

2.  Stands up for you in public when you're not there.

3.  Is not only there when they need something.

Yes, I have many in my life that is far from meeting 1, 2 and 3, but I am glad that for every 1,000 friends I have, 1 is a true one.

I rather be in a crowded house alone than be that person who can't be proud of who their true friend is.  That is the weakest of all characters. 

So if you ever find yourself in a crowded house alone, remember, it takes over a thousand friends to find that one true one.  So hold your head up high and be patient.

I have my true friend, and that is all I need.
